WORLD VOICE DAY 2023
By Mario Andrea
|
|
|
It is with great joy that we celebrate on April 16 the 21st WVD. Over these years, the WVD has grown, developing and promoting its initial goals – to give visibility to the Voice and to vocal health.
The general population has also been alerted to the importance of early diagnosis of the various diseases that can affect the Voice, as well as their prevention, in order to maintain a "healthy Voice" throughout their life.
These goals were only possible due to the involvement of all the professionals dedicated to the numerous areas of Voice. The Voice is undoubtedly the best example of the relationship between health, science, communication, and leisure.
It is impossible to know how many events are held annually around the world to celebrate the WVD, and every year new initiatives are proposed. Each one of them, whether they are screenings, conferences, colloquiums, concerts, shows or others, regardless of their dimension, contributes for the visibility of Voice.
Thanks to the multidisciplinary nature of Voice, we can impart to the population a wide range of knowledge which, in addition to its own value, is a means of raising awareness about how to care for the Voice.
I remember the workshops and master classes we organized in collaboration with other professional groups and in which we addressed various topics, such as: Voice in theater, in classical singing, in jazz, on Broadway, in mimicking, in advertising, in sportscasting, among others.
These topics were very well received by the general population as well as by Voice professionals from different areas.
The dissemination of all this activity, which has relied on the constant support of the media, is today amplified by social networks.
The collaboration between universities, hospitals with scientific societies and other professional groups has been extremely stimulating, sharing knowledge and experiences, creating and strengthening bonds of friendship between people with different backgrounds.
Scientific studies of multidisciplinary scope are becoming more and more frequent and today, when we search for - Voice - in search engines on the Internet, we find an increasing number of references which reveals great interest in the subject, to which the WVD has given a major contribution.
The way the general public has come to hear the "Voice", be it in speech or singing, has been benefiting from all this information, inviting a more attentive and enlightened hearing that gives greater pleasure to those listening.
One of the projects with great impact has been "The WVD at Schools", which sought to raise awareness among the school population, students as well as educators and teachers.
These goals have been achieved, but they were also far exceeded, since, through the children and teenagers, the messages about vocal health have reached parents and other family members. And thus, through a project dedicated to the school population, we reached the general public.
In the last few years, and in some countries, the WVD has also given great attention to the changes in voice throughout life associated with the aging process. The increase in life expectancy has reinforced the attention given to these changes due to the importance of preserving the ability to communicate.
Also increasingly valued have been the changes in vocal quality due to a psychological cause, pathologies that require a specific approach and of which the general public is not yet quite aware.
And, finally, I can't resist leaving these questions: How many millions of people have received these messages? How many started to look at the Voice in a different way? How many have started to use their voice in a more correct way? How many started to be more attentive to its alterations, enabling earlier diagnoses?
We have no doubt that the success of the WVD will continue to grow with the involvement and dedication of everyone, and also with the new and dynamic generations attracted by the fascination of Voice and the innovative capacity of new technologies.
No one doubts that Artificial Intelligence will change the way we live, and that will happen sooner than we think. In the case of Voice, we can all try to imagine the areas and new paths that AI will open, but our imagination will always fall short of the possibilities that will arise.
The World Voice Day proposed in 2002 by ELS is the day when Voice is celebrated simultaneously all over the world.
The WVD belongs to all of us who deal with, treat, and care for the Voice, as well as those who use it professionally, but more than that, WVD belongs to the entire population.
The World Voice Day is considered one of the major projects promoting health care worldwide.
Happy World Voice Day!
Mario Andrea, MD, PhD
Chairperson WVD Committee

Long post-operative stays prevent patients from returning to their daily life leading to considerable stress. Longer bed occupancy also prevents hospitals and physicians from treating more patients. Minimal invasive exoscopic transoral surgery with VITOM® 3D could be considered an interesting solution to reduce the average recovery time of the patient, shortening the length of hospital stay in the same time. Prof. Giorgio Peretti, Dr. Alessia Pennacchi and Dr. Filippo Marchi present case studies with minimal invasive transoral surgery treatment for early-stage laryngeal cancer using the exoscope VITOM® 3D.
