INTERVIEW WITH CESARE PIAZZA
ABOUT THE ELS 2023 CONGRESS
As President of the 14th Congress of the European Laryngological Society in Milan 21-23rd June what are the key highlights you are expecting?

The ELS biannual meeting will host, as usual, all the most prominent figures of the European and worldwide laryngological scene. 95 invited speakers will come from 22 EU and non-EU countries, while we already received more than 230 abstracts from 38 nationalities covering the entire world map.

The number and array of themes at the heart of the event will span from laryngeal cancer to complex airway management, from new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Exoscopic Surgery to speech therapy and voice/swallowing issues in different settings, from laryngeal transplantation to office-based surgery. Every aspect of the discipline will receive ample space throughout Keynote Lectures, Round Tables, Instructional Courses, Free Papers, Video Sessions, Sponsored Symposia, and E-Posters. A familial and friendly environment will allow fruitful interactions among people and will put in direct contact the youngest generation of future specialists with those that made the most prominent progress in the discipline in the last 40 years.

What are you most looking forward to at the conference?

As in the previous editions, I am looking forward to strengthening personal relationships, learning nuances from different fields and/or perspectives, making plan for future cooperative studies, and identifying areas in which we must work harder to get things better than they presently are, for our patients and profession. This must be done in a multidisciplinary environment, gathering together clinicians, surgeons, endoscopists, pediatricians, speech pathologists, radiologists, pathologists, radiation and medical oncologists, possibly from every part of Europe and the world.

Why should people come to this conference and who should attend?

Everyone interested in Laryngology at its best should come to Milan and attend such an event. People with a scientifically oriented activity as well as those with a more practical interest will gain insights in this multifaceted subspecialty and its relationship with the rest of Medicine. A bimodal distribution of quite young and more "mature" figures classically represents the most interesting ingredient of this meeting, stimulating both form the professional as well as from the cultural point of view.

Is it too late to sign up? If not - how does one sign up?

It will be possible to sign up at the ELS meeting up to the beginning of the event. However, the sooner the registration, the better the price and possibility to find accommodation in a busy Milan of early summer. However, registration is easy and can be made through the ELS website with a few clicks of your mouse.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you at the 14th ELS Meeting in Milan!

DYSPHONIA INTERNATIONAL -
A WORD FROM MARC REMACLE
The US-based organisation “Dysphonia International” (formerly the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association) is a foundation “dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by spasmodic dysphonia and related voice conditions through research, education, awareness, and support”, eager to keep patients informed. They have recently expanded their remit to cover other neurolaryngological disorders. Renowned American laryngologists, experts in neurolaryngology are included in their board. Their board is presently very keen to extend their activities outside the US.

The ELS has been recently contacted via the “Winter Days of Laryngology” course by American previously invited speakers, like Stacey Halum, Ramon Franco or Peak Woo. This a great opportunity for our organization:
The ELS members can register with this association to become referent laryngologists.
They can help us to provide better support to our patients.
Dysphonia International also proposed to sponsor financially clinical and basic research and to offer travel grants for presentations at major events, which could really be helpful for our young members. A permanent link will be added to the ELS website.

Marc Remacle, ELS senior adviser would be pleased to help you in contacting Mr Charles Reavis, President of Dysphonia.org and Mrs Kimberly Kuman, their CEO.
Peak Woo has kindly agreed to give one of our monthly lectures on neuroloaryngology, so watch our ELS Events calendar for more information coming soon.

INTRODUCTION OF A NEW ELS PARTNER - A.R.C. LASER
The ELS is very happy to announce a new partnership with A.R.C. Laser based in Germany.

The A.R.C. Laser GmbH is a family business that has been pursuing one goal since it was founded in 1996: To develop lasers with an inventive spirit and high quality standards that enable gentle and effective applications in modern medicine. In recent years, lasers have increasingly found their way into ear, nose and throat surgery and is irreplaceable today.

In laryngology doctors face new challenges every day. A laser allows minimally invasive interventions that can be executed not only extremely precise, but by using state-of-the-art fiber technology also make areas accessible that cannot be reached with conservative instruments. Low bleeding during surgery with maximum flexibility, protecting surrounding tissues and enormous precision allow optimal results for patients. Whether in surgery under general anesthesia or for procedures under local anesthesia: A.R.C. Laser offers exactly the laser that is tailored to surgeon's needs. Major interventions such as tumor resections with our Co2-Laser, sub-tracheal stenosis treatment in the OR, the delicate blood vessel coagulation of phonosurgery or papilloma treatment in the outpatient environment with our TruBlue laser. The A.R.C. Laser portfolio surely has the right device for surgeons in petto.

Long post-operative stays prevent patients from returning to their daily life leading to considerable stress. Longer bed occupancy also prevents hospitals and physicians from treating more patients. Minimal invasive exoscopic transoral surgery with VITOM® 3D could be considered an interesting solution to reduce the average recovery time of the patient, shortening the length of hospital stay in the same time. Prof. Giorgio Peretti, Dr. Alessia Pennacchi and Dr. Filippo Marchi present case studies with minimal invasive transoral surgery treatment for early-stage laryngeal cancer using the exoscope VITOM® 3D. Olympus Launches VISERA ELITE III Surgical Visualization Platform

An innovative and open solution bringing together multiple observation modes for future-proof endoscopic surgery

“With VISERA ELITE III, we provide a best-in-class surgical visualization platform designed for multiple medical specialties and configurations, allowing HCPs to fully focus on the patient during surgery. By incorporating the technologies of its predecessors VISERA ELITE II and VISERA 4K UHD into one platform, VISERA ELITE III enhances the quality of endoscopic surgery, contributes to improved efficiency in the operating room, and hereby elevates the standard of care,” said Kanichi Matsumoto, Global Head of Surgical Endoscopy at Olympus.

Innovation That Grows with Need

The platform allows software upgrades to add new surgical imaging functions as needed. Switching entire surgical visualization systems to access the latest technology is no longer necessary, which not only sets a new standard and provides a high degree of flexibility, but also makes VISERA ELITE III a future-proof investment.

Improved Image Quality for More Focus

VISERA ELITE III system comes with a focus adjust mode during 4K surgical observation and is equipped with the EDOF (Extended Depth of Field) function that allows precise endoscopic observations through continuous broad focus and seamless magnification. In addition, it provides the C-AF (Continuous Auto Focus) capability that automatically adjusts focus in accordance with the movement of the camera head and endoscope. This facilitates clearer image capture, both up close and at a greater distance, so that HCPs experience less stress during surgery, allowing them to concentrate on the patient and the procedure's outcome.

For more information about VISERA ELITE III, please visit olympus.eu/VISERAELITEIII

We would like to sincerely thank to all our sponsors.
