Dear members, colleagues and friends,

We are delighted to announce that the ELS Spring Congress will be going ahead in May. The one-day digital format will comprise four parallel streams – some pre-recorded and some “live and interactive”. And all of the sessions will be available to watch after the event, so if you miss anything, you can catch up afterwards. See below for more details.

Laryngologists around the world are facing a variety of challenges in the current pandemic, and in the next few newsletters, we will hear from colleagues around the world about how their own clinical services have been running during the current crisis.  Our friend and colleague Jérome Lechien tells us about his own practice below.

And if you haven’t visited our website recently, take a look – it’s been comprehensively updated and gives extensive information about the ELS, its history and activities. And you can meet the Presidential Council by clicking here.

Finally, if you are on Twitter, then head over to our Twitter feed here and follow us!

In case of any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our congress organizer Conventus by mail to els2021@conventus.de.
General Assembly
On 21 January 2021, the ELS online General Assembly took place.
The reason the special General Assembly was held is the fact that it was needed to approve ELS accounts to keep in line with requirments of Belgian fiscal law. This procedure should have taken place during the Stuttgart conference in 2020 however the pandemic has unfortunately interrupted both ELS conference schedule and governance procedures.

Topics and decisions:
  • Ratification of the composition of the Presidential Council.
  • Approval of finances for the years 2017, 2018, 2019
  • Special release from liability to be granted to the board members for not having drawn up the annual accounts within the legal determined timeframe.
  • Invitation to ELS Congress 2021.

LARYNGOLOGY IN LOCKDOWN – a view from our colleagues
In each ELS newsletter, we will be talking to laryngologists from around the world to let us know how their work has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. This time, we speak to Jerome Lechien.

What has happened to your outpatient clinics during the lockdowns?
During the first wave, all non-emergency consultations were cancelled in Paris, but we were able to continue our cancer activity.

Have you been able to continue with “routine” operating, or just urgent/cancer cases?
Only emergency surgeries.

Have you been doing tracheostomies? Open or percutaneous?
Surgical, in the ICU, in the bed of the patient with anesthesiologists at the head to give curare to the patient to limit the cough when the trachea is opened (limiting the aerosolization).

Have you been doing other jobs?
I made a lot of researches about loss of smell. Carlos Chiesa and me published the first study reporting loss of smell as an important symptom of COVID-19. Approximately 50 studies published this year on this topic.

Did You Know That Using NBI Can Improve Patient Outcomes While Reducing Overall Costs?
NBI (Narrow Band Imaging) allows ENT specialists to diagnose and treat early-stage laryngeal cancer even more precisely and reliably. NBI is also a very accurate technology for follow-up procedures. It is clinically proven that by using NBI, doctors are able to detect more suspicious lesions compared to using traditional white light (WL), consequently leading to potentially reduced recurrence. Particularly when combined with high definition (e.g. HDTV), NBI can provide a more-detailed and higher-contrasted visualization of blood vessels than other endoscopic procedures. An example from daily clinical practice illustrates this: Before a patient’s vocal sound or vocal capabilities deteriorate, NBI can be routinely used to determine early changes in the vocal folds’ vessels, which can also be quantitively and qualitatively classified. Numerous studies, including a growing number of randomized controlled trials (RCT) and meta-analyses, highlight the clinical value of NBI, especially regarding cancer detection and examination of suspicious mucosal areas.
How NBI Reduces Overall Costs
NBI offers superiorefficacy in the early diagnosis of laryngeal cancer in pre-, intra- and postoperative stages compared to WL endoscopy. As tumors can be detected at an early stage using NBI, potential complications are reduced and the time a patient needs to spend in hospital for treatment, follow-up and treatment due to tumor recurrence is potentially less. NBI comes with Olympus medical equipment at no additional cost for extra equipment, disposables or drugs.
