It is a great privilege and honor to address you as a new President of the European Laryngological Society.
First of all, I would like to sincerely thank and congratulate Professor Giorgio Peretti and his team for the outstanding job that they have done at the recent ELS Meeting in Genoa. The organization, scientific contents, setting and social programmed were really extraordinary. The meeting has now a true global signature. It would certainly be a very high target to bit for the next meeting in London in 2018.
Secondly, I would like to thank all the members of the Presidential and Scientific Councils of the ELS, and those of the Committees and Study Groups that have completed their terms of office for their hard work over the past few years. They have certainly taken the ELS to a top level amongst the most prestigious Medical and Surgical Societies, not only in Europe but worldwide.
I would like specifically to thank Fred Dikkers for his outstanding contribution as a General Secretary. Being a General Secretary of any society can be an extremely hard and thankless task; there is no doubt that he has been the heart and soul the ELS over the past few years. I would also like to make a special mention to Professor Jan Olofsson as a liaison officer for the European Archives of ORL-HNS. Unfortunately, health issues have precipitated his departure and we would therefore like to wish him a very prompt and successful recovery.
I would also like to welcome all the new members of the Presidential and Scientific Councils, Committees and Study Groups. I would like to thank them their will and desire to help the ELS to progress to a very bright future.
Also, and as you most of you have already seen, we have a new Website. A 21st century website which is not only very smart but will be very easy to navigate and no doubt will help members and non-members to obtain the necessary information and resources from the Society. I would like to thank Marcus Gugatschka, Christian Sittel. Maria de la Mota – our secretary- and the information technology team behind the project for their outstanding work. Please visit the website and I am sure you will be impressed.
There is no doubt that world in which we live in, health care systems and medical profession faces continuous and very difficult challenges. The recent events in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Turkey and France are a very clear example of these. However, I am convinced that the Team ELS will be able to face and overcome those challenges and take this Society to a very bright future.
Finally, I would like you to invite to London in 2018. We will do our best for you to enjoy a fantastic meeting and off course an iconic city.
With my best wishes
Ricard Simo FRCS(ORL-HNS)
President of the European Laryngological Society
